About the game

What you do in a play session

If you've already mastered the art of spreading your followers across the kingdom of Carcassonne and feel like it's missing that extra spice, the "The Signposts" expansion has arrived to give your roads a new direction! With 12 new tiles, this little gem mixes perfectly with the base game, bringing a touch of navigation to your routes.

Each new tile comes with road segments and, coolest of all, two of three possible signposts: left turn, right turn, or straight. The magic happens when scoring roads: if a road with a signpost is completed, you check the adjacent tile. If the path on this new tile matches what the signpost indicates (like, the signpost says turn right, and the road on the next tile also goes right), the signpost scores! And there's more: the more types of signposts you score on the same road, the more valuable they become. Scoring one type is worth 1 point per signpost, two types are worth 2 points, and if you manage all three types on a single road... well, that's a party, worth 3 points each! To add that final touch, at the end of the game, signposts on unfinished roads that still point in the correct direction are worth 1 point each. It's a small expansion, but it adds a very interesting strategic layer without overcomplicating the gameplay we already love. Perfect for those who want to level up their Carcassonne games without having to learn a bunch of new rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

6 questions
Do I need the Carcassonne base game to play?
Absolutely! This is an expansion, so the Carcassonne base game is essential to use the new tiles and rules.
How many players does this expansion support?
It maintains the player count of the base game, which is 2 to 5 players.
Does it significantly increase the game's complexity?
No, it's a very light expansion. It adds an extra tactical layer with the signposts, but the rules are easy to grasp and don't change the main flow of Carcassonne.
How much playtime does it add?
Being small and having straightforward rules, the added playtime is minimal, keeping the original duration of 30-45 minutes.
Is it worth it for someone who already has many Carcassonne expansions?
If you enjoy adding small strategic variations without much complication, yes! It focuses on a specific aspect (roads and directions) and can be an interesting addition to your collection.
How do the signposts work in practice?
When a road with a signpost is scored, you look at the adjacent tile. If the road on that new tile follows the direction indicated by the signpost (left, right, or straight), the signpost scores. Scoring more types of signposts on the same road increases their value.
