Cathedral is a compact strategy duel that challenges players to master a 10x10 square board with wooden pieces shaped like buildings ranging from 1 to 5 squares. Each player receives a set of colored pieces, and the game starts with the first player placing the neutral ‘Cathedral’ piece in the center. Players then alternate placing their buildings, attempting to enclose areas to capture opponent or neutral pieces. When a player successfully encloses a region with at most one opponent or neutral piece, that piece is removed and the captured area becomes off‑limits to the opponent. The goal is to leave the fewest number of square units of buildings that cannot be placed – the player with the least “inactive” points wins. The Enclosure mechanic combines with Pattern Building as players plan building patterns that form efficient enclosures. The Square Grid offers visual clarity, while Tile Placement demands careful positioning. Although simple, the game requires tactical thinking: each move can open or close capture opportunities. With an average 20‑minute playtime, it provides quick matches, ideal for a late‑afternoon session or for those looking for a light yet challenging strategy game. The experience is even more fun when players are friends who enjoy testing planning and anticipation skills, as piece capture creates constant tension. If you like board games that don’t require much prep but deliver intense strategic decisions, Cathedral is a great choice to try out.
