About the game
What you do in a play session
You know those games that look super simple, but once you sit down to play, you realize there's much more to it? Well, Chartae is exactly like that! Here, you and your opponent take on the roles of cartographers trying to reconstruct an ancient map that is fading from memory. The setup is minimalist: just nine square tiles that form the board, each divided between a land zone and a water zone. But don't let the visual simplicity fool you; the elegance of this game lies in the competing objectives. While one player is focused on connecting the land zones to form a continuous path, the other is trying to do the same with the water zones. Each turn, the challenge is to decide: do you rotate a tile already on the table to mess with your opponent, or do you place a new one to try and complete your own path? It's a duel of pure strategy and spatial perception, where information is almost total, but planning must be surgical. Since the game is very fast, it's perfect for a break between larger games or for an intense 10-minute duel. It's a perfect example of how less can be more: few pieces, but a strategic depth that will make you think twice before every move. If you enjoy abstract strategy games that don't need giant manuals to get started, but offer a real challenge, Chartae is your next favorite pocket-sized game.
