About the game

What you do in a play session

In late‑medieval Italy, the booming cloth trade forces merchants to draft contracts in a language everyone can read, while scholars tire of elite Latin and champion the Volgare, the vernacular that will become modern Italian. In De Vulgari Eloquentia: Deluxe Edition, each player takes on a historic role – a merchant aiming to become a banker, a friar climbing the ecclesiastical ladder, or even the future pope. The goal is to earn the most Volgare points, gained by reading famous manuscripts such as Saint Francis' Canticle of the Sun or the Verona Riddle, by improving social status (e.g., merchant to banker, friar to abbot) and by securing backing from politicians, nobles and amanuenses.

Players spend Action Points to study texts, negotiate, travel across a continental‑scale map of Italy, or invest in religious offices. Each choice moves markers along tracks for status, money and influence. End‑game bonuses reward set collections of documents or political support. The deluxe edition features a richly illustrated map, premium wooden components, fresh iconography and a variable set‑up that ensures a new experience each play. With a moderate weight (3.7/5) and a 90‑120 minute playtime, the game blends strategic planning, resource management and a vivid historical theme, appealing to Eurogame fans and anyone who loves a story of linguistic rebirth.
