About the game

What you do in a play session

Ever thought about being a detective who relies on ears rather than magnifying glasses? echoes: The Microchip drops you into a post-apocalyptic future where civilization has crumbled, and your job is to piece together the fragments of its tragic downfall. Forget about reading walls of text; here, the investigation is driven by audio. You'll need a smartphone or tablet with the free echoes app, which acts as the brains of the operation, processing the clues you uncover.

This is a cooperative experience where your group must organize 24 story pieces. Each piece is represented by a physical object—a card or a board component—and scanning these items with the app unlocks "echoes" from the past. These audio clips contain conversations, noises, and crucial hints that help you assemble the puzzle. The story is split into six chapters, and your goal is to identify which three objects belong to each chapter and, more importantly, the correct order in which they occur.

Don't expect it to be a walk in the park! The app is a strict judge: if you get the sequence or the items wrong, it will let you know and point out where you went off track. On the flip side, when you get it right, the app unlocks the full chapter to be heard all at once. This is essential, as new details that were previously missed might surface. Beyond the audio, keep a close eye on the illustrations and physical details of the components; sometimes the answer is right in front of you, hidden in a visual detail you overlooked while focusing solely on the sound.

It's a perfect game for those who enjoy immersive mysteries and want something different from traditional board games. Since the experience is based on solving a specific mystery, replayability is limited once the case is cracked, but the journey there is intense and highly satisfying. If you enjoy working as a team, listening carefully, and piecing together a narrative puzzle, The Microchip is the right choice for your next game night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you buy

6 questions
Can the game be played solo?
Yes, echoes works great solo, but the experience of discussing clues with friends is usually more fun.
How long does a game take?
The game is designed to last about 60 minutes, depending on how quickly your group connects the clues.
Do I need an internet connection to play?
You need to download the app, but after that, it works independently to scan the codes.
Can the game be played again?
Since it's a mystery game with a fixed solution, it has limited replayability once you've uncovered the whole story.
Is it hard to learn the rules?
Not at all! The game is very intuitive. The app itself guides players through the flow of the game, so you learn as you play.
Can I play with children?
The game is recommended for 14+ mainly due to the deduction complexity and mystery theme, but it is accessible to teenagers.
