About the game

What you do in a play session

In たたらばと森 (Tatara, Field and Forest), each player takes on the role of a Toryo clan striving to achieve perpetual tatara steel production. The long‑term goal is to keep the furnace (tatara) running forever, but that only works if the clan learns to coexist with the Okuizumo forest. The forest evolves semi‑predictably: five different species mature at varying rates, and at the end of each round the planted trees grow a bit randomly. Players may plant new saplings and harvest trees already on the board; cutting an opponent's tree costs extra, forcing strategic choices about where to spend resources. The modular board means the forest layout changes each game, boosting replay value. Action‑queue mechanics require players to program their moves, while area majority rewards whoever controls regions with the most trees or influence. Balancing planting, harvesting, and expanding charcoal and tool production determines who secures the raw materials needed to upgrade their furnace. Games last 30‑50 minutes for 2‑4 players, with a light weight (2.5/5) that blends planning, ecological forecasting, and a dash of economic competition. Perfect for fans of thematic production and environmental management games who don’t want a heavyweight rulebook.
