About the game

What you do in a play session

Humanity is dead, the trash remains and the gig economy is shattered – and that’s where you, the freelancer, step in. In Freelancers: A Crossroads Game you build a character from scratch, pick race and job, then set out to explore ruins, jungles and devastated towns, battling grotesque monsters and scavenging loot. The big selling point is that no game master is needed: a companion app tells the story, voices dialogue, streams high‑quality audio and generates dynamic missions. There are five stand‑alone campaigns, each with hundreds of branching paths, ensuring huge replay value. The system blends worker placement (deciding where to act), deck/bag/pool building (you acquire cards, tokens and gear as you go) and RPG mechanics, letting your hero evolve over the session. Colorful polyhedral dice add visual flair and varying success levels. The book‑as‑board serves as guide and map, while standees represent your avatar and foes. Rules are straightforward, making it ideal for a short campaign experience (90‑180 minutes) with no prep. Though cooperative, each player controls their own freelancer, so group communication and strategy matter. The light weight (2.1/5) reflects the low learning curve, although the character options and required app may need a brief familiarisation period. In short, it mixes fantasy adventure, fun dice, and tech‑driven storytelling, perfect for 3‑7 players who love epic tales without the hassle of a traditional RPG master.
