About the game
What you do in a play session
Gartenbau is an abstract strategy game that blends layering, pattern building, a dual-track rondel, and tile placement to grow a flourishing garden. Players start with an empty board and, throughout the game, lay flower, seedling, and tool tiles across three distinct layers: the bottom layer provides the basic terrain, the middle adds seedlings, and the top places mature flowers. Each flower has specific growth requirements, and you must carefully plan where to place each tile to meet those needs before the season ends. The dual rondel offers two action tracks—one for preparing the ground and another for planting and caring for flowers. Playing the rondel requires choosing the right action at the right time, as each move affects the availability of other actions in upcoming rounds. Pattern building comes into play when you try to align tiles of similar colors or types to earn prestige points. When you complete a pattern or satisfy all requirements of a flower, you receive prestige points, which are the game's ultimate goal. The winner is the player with the most prestige at the end of the game. The game features high-quality components: cardstock tiles, a wooden rondel marker, and a well-illustrated rulebook. The artwork is vintage, evoking the late 19th century, and adds a rustic charm that complements the gardening theme. Gartenbau is perfect for fans of tile-laying and strategic planning who don’t want the complexity of longer board games. It runs in 30 to 60 minutes and supports 2 to 4 players, offering a balanced mix of competition and symbolic cooperation as everyone strives to create the best garden possible.
