Imagine you and your friends as Taoist monks trying to prevent the lord of hell, Wu-Feng, from returning to life. In Ghost Stories, the mission is clear: protect the village and ensure the sacred ashes don't fall into the hands of legions of ghosts. It's a tense cooperative experience where teamwork is everything to avoid being overwhelmed by waves of evil spirits.
The dynamics work like this: each turn, new ghosts appear on the modular board. Some are simple, while others are absolute nightmares that block village actions or force the active player to roll the dreaded curse die. To exorcise these creatures, you use colored dice. If the die color matches the ghost's color, you win! The white result is a wild card, saving many a monk's skin. If luck isn't on your side, you can spend Tao tokens to complete the required color.
The board is crucial, as each village location offers a different bonus. Need to revive a fallen comrade? Head to the cemetery. Need more tokens? The herbalist is your best bet. But be careful: if three village tiles become haunted, if all monks perish, or if the draw pile runs out before the final boss is defeated, Wu-Feng wins and the village falls into chaos.
The challenge scales as you progress, culminating in the final battle against Wu-Feng's incarnation. For those who love a real challenge, there are harder difficulty levels with additional bosses to defeat. It's a game of risk management and positioning, where one wrong move can lead to the group's defeat. Can you keep your cool under pressure, or will you let the village be haunted?
