About the game
What you do in a play session
The Republic expansion for Glory to Rome finally landed officially in 2012 alongside the Black Box edition, adding 15 cards that make the game friendlier and more balanced, especially for newcomers. The new cards replace the originals: Crane (6 copies) swaps out the Circus and lets you lead or follow the Architect role; Domus Aurea (3) replaces the Coliseum, allowing you to demolish incomplete buildings for free when playing the Legionary role; Forum Romanum (3) takes the place of the Forum and grants an instant win if you have one client of each type and one material of each type in your stockpile; and Tribunal (3) replaces the Senate, letting you draw a Jack when you act as the Thinker. The starting hand also changes – players begin with five order cards instead of four plus a Jack – and petitions can be made with two cards of the same role instead of three, speeding up the flow. The net effect is a more forgiving game, easing the frustration of mastering card combos and better balancing the Craftsman and Architect roles. Bonus merchant cards from the Black Box are included as well. Playtime stays around 60 minutes, for 2‑5 players, with a moderate complexity (weight 2.9/5). If you already enjoy the base Glory to Rome, Republic is a solid upgrade that smooths the learning curve while keeping the core experience intact.
