About the game
What you do in a play session
In 17th‑century Hamburg, massive walls still shield the city from the scars of the Thirty Years' War, while trade booms thanks to Protestant refugees. Hamburgum puts each player in charge of an ambitious family aiming to turn the city into a powerhouse of wealth and prestige. You produce three period‑appropriate goods – beer, sugar and cloth – and ship them through the harbor to foreign markets. Each round follows a rondel: a circular track divided into action spaces (build, produce, load, donate, etc.). Moving forward on the rondel is free, but skipping sectors costs resources, forcing you to plan your moves carefully.
Set collection kicks in when you need specific quantities of goods to complete shipments or to make church donations. Prestige, measured by those donations, is the only true win condition – gold and merchandise are merely tools. Competition is fierce for prime spots on the board: the best building sites and the most coveted berths in the harbor. Every choice affects your ability to produce, transport, and ultimately impress the cathedral.
With no random cards, the game relies entirely on strategic decisions and careful rondel management. Up to five players can join, and a match runs about 75 minutes, perfect for a strategic evening. Mac Gerdts' signature rondel design appeals to fans of sequential‑decision games, while Hamburg's historic setting provides a rich, visually appealing backdrop. If you enjoy city building, optimizing trade routes, and set collection without luck, Hamburgum offers an elegant and well‑balanced gaming experience.
