Goal of the Game
The theme of Intarsia involves the renovation of the Café de Paris. You have been hired to work on the valuable parquet floor, decorating it with sophisticated woodworking ornaments. In a competition of artisans, the goal is to build the most valuable ornaments and progress through the work to earn new resources. The game ends after 3 rounds, and whoever has accumulated the highest total score will be the winner, securing the woodworking contract.
Setup
- Place the tool board next to the score board. Then, place the tool tiles on the tool board, each in its corresponding space. (Note: Depending on the number of players, remove some tool tiles as per the manual instructions).
- Organize the material cards by color in 5 face-up piles within reach of everyone.
- Organize the wood elements by shape and color in a supply within reach of everyone. (Note: Depending on the number of players, remove some frames from the supply and return them to the box).
- Place the score board in the center of the table and add:
- One scoring marker for each player at position 0 on the score track.
- One reward marker (light brown marker) at the position indicated by the arrow on the reward track.
- The 4 point tiles in the center of the score board.
- One round marker (light brown marker) at position 1 on the round track.
- Each player chooses a scoring marker and receives the floor board whose wall color matches the chosen marker.
- Decide together which side of the floor board will be used (side A or B). Place the board in front of you with the chosen side facing up.
- Each player takes 1 connector from the supply and places it in the center of their floor board.
- Each player receives their initial hand of starting hand cards.
Game Flow
The game is played over 3 rounds. Each round consists of 3 phases:
- Preparation phase: Each player takes the material cards indicated on their starting hand card. From the 2nd round onwards, you may have remaining cards from the previous round. After taking the cards, place your starting hand card next to your floor board.
- Building phase: The starting player is determined (in the 1st round, anyone; in subsequent rounds, whoever passed last in the previous round). Players play clockwise. On your turn, you perform 1 building action, which consists of 4 steps. If you cannot or do not want to act, you must pass and sit out the round. The phase ends when everyone has passed.
- Conclusion phase: Players receive points for the connectors on their floor boards (the value increases each round). The round marker advances on the round track. If the marker is at position 3, the game ends. Otherwise, the last player to pass chooses a starting hand card from the rest, and the other players choose next.
Actions and How to Play
The building action is the only available action and follows these 4 mandatory steps:
1) Pay for the wood element
Choose a wood element and pay its cost using material cards of the color of the ornament you are building.
- Wild cards can be used as any color.
- You can use the 2:1 trade rule (exchange any two material cards for one of the required color).
2) Build the wood element
Add the element to your floor board. It must be adjacent to an existing element (frames need a connector; connectors need a frame). Elements must follow the order: frame $\rightarrow$ midsection $\rightarrow$ core $\rightarrow$ table. You can only build on empty and dedicated spaces on your board.
3) Claim a tool tile
If your floor board now meets the requirement of a tool tile on the tool board, you may claim it. Place it next to your board. You gain points equal to the current tile's bonus plus the bonus of all tiles of the same tool type that you already possess. Advance your scoring marker on the score track.
4) Take new material cards
Return the cards used in step 1 to the stacks. Then, take new cards according to the reward table of the built element. If the stack is empty, take from another stack (except the wild cards stack). If you advance the reward marker on the reward track, take the 3 material cards indicated on the space where the marker landed.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends after the 3rd round. Perform the final scoring by adding the points of your ornaments on the floor board:
- 1-piece ornaments (frame only): 1 point each.
- 2-piece ornaments (frame + midsection): 3 points each.
- 3-piece ornaments (frame + midsection + core): 7 points each.
- 4-piece ornaments (frame + midsection + core + table): 12 points each.
The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, the player who has claimed the most tool tiles wins. If the tie persists, the result is split.
