About the game
What you do in a play session
Tantrix is a classic abstract strategy game that uses painted resin hexagonal tiles, each bearing three colored tracks that connect two sides of the piece. Originating in New Zealand, it can be enjoyed as a solo puzzle – with challenges ranging from easy to almost impossible – or as a multiplayer showdown where strategy, a dash of luck, and reading opponents' open hands are key. Each player holds an open hand of six tiles and, on their turn, must first fill all "required spaces," meaning any empty spot bordered by three existing tiles. After placing a tile, a new one is drawn at random, keeping the hand full. When no required spaces remain, a player may place a tile in any legal spot, then returns to satisfy required spaces again. The goal is to create the longest line or loop of your chosen colour; closed loops score double because each tile counts twice. The full set contains 56 tiles, while smaller versions focus on colour‑matching or bite‑size puzzles. Tantrix hones spatial thinking, the ability to generate opportunities, and the skill of forcing opponents to extend your paths, all within roughly 30‑minute games for 1‑6 players. Its low weight (2.2/5) and gentle learning curve make it approachable for newcomers, yet the strategic depth satisfies veterans who love to optimise every move.
