About the game

What you do in a play session

If you love games where every player has a completely different playstyle, Kauri is your next obsession! Imagine New Zealand in a fascinating historical setting, where the island's fate is decided by the balance between nature and human expansion. Here, there is no single path to victory. You can choose to play as the Māori, focusing on building sacred temples (Whare Nui) and respecting the balance, or you can opt for the more 'chaotic' factions. The English, for example, have a very clear strategy of deforesting to later hunt, while the Kiwis fight desperately just to survive, and the possums try to expand their territory as much as possible. The silent protagonist is the Kauri, that iconic tree that serves as the heart of the conflict. Over five intense rounds, you will use cards to control areas, move resources, and try to prevent your opponents from pulling ahead. It is pure asymmetric strategy, featuring beautiful wooden components and a board that transports you to the Pacific islands. The beauty lies precisely in this disparity: each faction plays a different game within the same board. While some build, others destroy; while some preserve, others colonize. If you enjoy area control games that aren't just about 'who has more pieces on the map,' but rather 'who uses their unique abilities best,' get ready for an epic struggle in Te Ika-a-Māui!
