About the game
What you do in a play session
Get ready to dive into Hawaiian folklore with Kilauea! In this game, you take on the role of a Mo'o — lizard-like spirits — with a crucial mission: build Tiki columns to worship the powerful volcano goddess, Pele, to keep her calm. The game balances simple rules with a scoring system that forces you to keep a close eye on your opponents' every move, as the struggle for influence is constant.
The gameplay revolves around a Rondel, where you move around the volcano to decide your next move. You have three main options: harvest wood from the forests (which also activates interesting bonuses), build Tikis in the common areas around the volcano, or invest in building Tikis on your own personal island. The trick lies in resource management and positioning: you must plan which wood colors to keep on your island to multiply the points earned at the volcano.
The game ends when the first and third forests are completely depleted. The final scoring is where the strategy truly shines: you multiply the number of Tikis on your island by the Tikis of the same color at the volcano. But be careful! There's a twist: the dominant color (the tallest column) in each zone only earns 1 point per piece, while the minority colors earn 3 points. This creates a fascinating 'tug-of-war' dynamic, where being the leader isn't always the best strategy, and you might actually want your opponent to take the lead so you can profit from being the underdog. It's an abstract strategy game with high player interaction, where risk management and board awareness are the keys to victory.
