Game Objective: Dominate Tokyo and Crush Your Rivals!
Prepare for mass destruction! In King of Tokyo, you take on the role of a giant monster – it could be a mutant, a furious robot, or even an abominable alien – in a chaotic and super fun battle for control of the Japanese capital. Your objective is simple, yet challenging: be the one and only King of Tokyo!
How do you achieve this glory? There are two ways to win:
- Be the first monster to conquer 20 Victory Points (VP).
- Show your claws and eliminate all your enemies. The last survivor emerges victorious!
Roll the dice, choose your strategy, and smash everything in your path to victory!
Setup: The Battle Board
Let's set up the table for the brawl to begin! Follow these simple steps:
- Place the Tokyo Board in the center of the table, within everyone's reach. It represents the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, divided into Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay.
- With 2 to 4 players, use only Tokyo City. With 5 to 6 players, use both Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay.
- Shuffle the Power Cards to form a deck and place it near the board. Deal the first three cards face up on the table.
- Place the tokens (Smoke, Mimic, Shrink, Poisoned) and the black dice in the center of the table. Set aside the green dice; they will only be used with certain Power Cards.
- Form a bank with all the Energy cubes.
- Each player chooses a Monster and takes the corresponding figure and Monster Board. Adjust your Monster's Health Points (heart) to 10 and Victory Points (star) to 0.
To determine who starts, each player rolls the 6 black dice. Whoever has the most [attack symbol] results starts. In case of a tie, continue rolling until only one has the highest number of [attack symbol].
The Game Turn: Actions of a Furious Monster
The game proceeds clockwise. Each player's turn is divided into 5 phases:
1. Roll the Dice
On your turn, you can roll the 6 black dice (and 1 or 2 green dice, if you have a Power Card that allows it) up to three times. You can stop rolling at any time.
- First Roll: Roll all the dice.
- Second Roll: If you like some results, you can set aside the dice you liked and reroll only the ones that weren't good.
- Third Roll: If you changed your mind, you can reroll the dice that were set aside, as well as those you still don't like.
After the third roll (or when you decide to stop), you proceed to the next phase.
2. Resolve Dice Effects
You must resolve all the effects of the dice obtained in your last roll, in any order you prefer. Here's what each symbol does:
- [Star Symbol - Victory Points]: If you roll a set of three [1 symbol], [2 symbol], or [3 symbol], gain as many Victory Points as the number rolled. Each extra die with the same number grants 1 extra VP.
- [Lightning Symbol - Energy]: Gain 1 Energy cube from the bank for each [energy symbol] rolled. Save your Energy cubes to spend them later.
- [Paw Symbol - Attack]: Monsters not in the same location as you lose 1 Health Point (heart) for each [paw symbol] rolled.
- If you are in Tokyo (City or Bay), all Monsters outside Tokyo lose health.
- If you are outside Tokyo, all Monsters in Tokyo lose health.
Each [heart symbol] lost means the loss of 1 Health Point. If a Monster loses its last Health Point, it is eliminated (its Constant cards and Energy cubes are discarded).
Attention: Monsters in Tokyo who lose health due to an attack can choose to Yield (leave Tokyo) or stay. Monsters who Yield Tokyo still lose health.
- [Heart Symbol - Heal]: If you are outside Tokyo, you can recover 1 Health Point for each [heart symbol] rolled. You cannot recover above 10 Health Points.
Important: If you are in Tokyo, the [heart symbol] you obtain do not allow you to recover Health Points (but Power Cards can help!).
3. Enter Tokyo
If no one is in Tokyo, you must enter and place your Monster in Tokyo City. Upon entering Tokyo, you gain 1 Victory Point!
With 5 or 6 players, if Tokyo City is occupied, but Tokyo Bay is empty, you must enter Tokyo Bay and also gain 1 Victory Point. Monsters in Tokyo City or Tokyo Bay are considered "in Tokyo".
If you start your turn in Tokyo, you gain 2 Victory Points!
You can only Yield (leave Tokyo) if you lose health due to an attack from another Monster. When a Monster Yields, the attacking Monster must take its place in Tokyo.
4. Buy Power Cards
Now it's time to spend your Energy! You can buy one or more of the three Power Cards that are face up on the table. To buy, spend the amount of Energy indicated at the top of the card. Purchased cards are immediately replaced by new ones from the deck, which can be bought right away.
Don't like the available cards? You can spend 2 Energy to discard the three cards and reveal three new ones from the deck. They can also be bought immediately.
Power Cards can be of two types:
- Constant: Keep these cards face up in front of you until the end of the game (unless something says otherwise).
- Discard: Resolve the card's effects immediately and then discard it.
5. End of Turn
Some Power Card effects activate at the end of your turn. Once everything is resolved, pass the dice to the player on your left.
End of Game and Scoring: Who Will Be King?
The game ends immediately at the end of the turn in one of these two situations:
- A Monster reaches 20 Victory Points.
- There is only one Monster left in play (all others have been eliminated).
The Monster that conquers 20 Victory Points or is the last survivor is crowned the glorious King of Tokyo!
Tips for Winning: Strategies of an Experienced Monster
To dominate Tokyo, you'll need more than just luck with the dice. Here are some tips:
- Manage your stay in Tokyo: Entering Tokyo gives you 1 VP, and starting your turn there gives you another 2 VP. It's a great source of points! However, you cannot heal while in Tokyo and will be the target of all monsters outside. Know when to enter to score and when to Yield to heal and protect yourself.
- Balance Attack and Energy: Don't just focus on attacking. Collecting Energy cubes is crucial for buying Power Cards, which can give you unique abilities, extra healing, or even more Victory Points. A good card can change the course of the game!
- Observe opponents' Health Points: Keep an eye on the health of other monsters. If an opponent has low Health Points, a successful attack can eliminate them and bring you closer to victory by elimination, or even give you the opportunity to enter Tokyo if they Yield.
