Game Objective
In Kingdomino Origins, the objective is to develop your tribe by bringing fire to your camps with the help of volcanoes and their eruptions. You must explore natural resources such as mammoths, fish, flint, and mushrooms to recruit cave dwellers, increasing your tribe and hunting territory.
The ultimate goal is to connect your dominoes to form the best possible hunting territory for your tribe, in a 5 by 5 square area, earning comfort points and ensuring your victory.
The player with the highest score wins the game.
Setup
It is recommended to play Discovery Mode a few times to familiarize yourself with the game before trying Totem Mode and Tribe Mode. These rules are for 3 or 4 players. Specific rules for 2 players are at the end of the manual.
Follow these steps to set up the game:
- Each player chooses a color and takes the following components:
- A Starting Tile (one square) and a Hut of their color. Place the starting tile face up in front of you and the Hut on this tile. This is the beginning of your territory.
- A Tribal Chief of their color.
- Shuffle the dominoes. Place them, numbered side up, in the box insert to form a draw pile.
- Take the first 4 dominoes from the draw pile and arrange them numbered side up: form a row in ascending order with the lowest number at the top, and then flip them over, revealing the terrain side.
- Place the 10 Fire Tokens near the dominoes, separated by the number of flames shown (1, 2, or 3 flames).
- One of the players gathers all the Tribal Chiefs, shuffles them, and draws one at a time from their hand and gives it to the player to place on an empty domino. When your Tribal Chief appears, also place it on an empty domino in the row. Each domino can only have one Tribal Chief.
- In a 3-player game, discard the unused domino.
- In a 4-player game, the last player has no choice and must place their Tribal Chief on the domino that remains empty.
- Once all Tribal Chiefs have been placed, form a new row in the same way as before, drawing 4 new dominoes and ordering them (step 3).
Totem Mode Setup
Start the setup as in Discovery Mode. Once the dominoes are flipped to the terrain side, place a Wood Resource on each square according to the terrain and resource icon. Do not place any Resource on a square with a printed flame icon.
- Place a mammoth on each grassland.
- Place a fish on each lake.
- Place a mushroom in each jungle.
- Place a flint in each quarry.
- Do not place anything on deserts and volcanoes.
Repeat the Wood Resource setup every time you line up 4 new dominoes. The Resources remain on the dominoes until the end of the game, unless they are destroyed by fire.
Take the 4 square Totem pieces from the box and place them near the 2 rows of dominoes, visible to all players.
Tribe Mode Setup
Set up the game in the same way as in Discovery Mode. Place the indicated Resources on the dominoes as in Totem Mode (except for the 4 Totem pieces, these are left in the box). Then:
- Position the Cave Board above the rows of dominoes.
- Shuffle the Cave Dweller pieces and stack them on the leftmost square of the board, face down. Reveal the first 4 pieces from the stack and place them in the 4 empty spaces on the board.
Game Flow
The order of play is determined by the position of the Tribal Chiefs in the first row of dominoes. The player whose Tribal Chief is placed on the first domino starts.
Each player, on their turn, must complete the following 2 actions, in order:
- Include your Domino
- Choose a New Domino
After the first player completes their actions, it is the next player's turn in the first row of dominoes to perform these two actions. The remaining players play their turn in the order of the row, until the last domino in the row is played.
After all players have played, a new row of dominoes is formed, and a new round begins.
There will be 12 rounds in a 3 or 4 player game.
Tribe Mode Game Flow
On your turn, after completing the "Include your Domino" and "Choose a New Domino" actions, you will have the option to perform a 3rd action: Recruit a Cave Dweller.
Actions and How to Play
1. Include your Domino
Take the domino you chose when you placed your Tribal Chief on it and include it in your territory according to the Connection Rules.
Connection Rules
Each player must build their own 25-square territory (each domino consists of 2 squares).
To place your domino, you must:
- Connect it to your starting tile. The starting tile is a wild card, meaning any terrain can be connected to it. Or,
- Connect it to another domino with at least one square that matches the terrains on the two pieces (vertically or horizontally).
- Ensure that the domino territory forms a 5 by 5 square area, including the starting tile. The territory must have a total surface of 25 squares.
If it is impossible to include the domino in your territory following these rules, discard that domino. You will not score points with it.
If a domino can be included according to the rules, then it must be included, even if it does not help the player at all.
Volcanoes and Fire Tokens
The volcano is a special type of terrain. It erupts and spews flames into the air, causing fires that tribes can use to light bonfires. These lava flames will be referred to in this manual simply as "flames." However, volcanoes are not exploitable terrains, so a region of volcanoes will not provide you with any points at the end of the game.
There are 3 types of volcanoes:
- Volcano with 1 crater: launches 1 flame up to 3 squares away.
- Volcano with 2 craters: launches 2 flames up to 2 squares away.
- Volcano with 3 craters: launches 3 flames 1 square away.
Once you have included a domino with a volcano in your territory, take the corresponding Fire Token:
- 1 volcanic crater: Fire Token with 1 flame.
- 2 volcanic craters: Fire Token with 2 flames.
- 3 volcanic craters: Fire Token with 3 flames.
The distance the flame can be launched is shown on the back of the Fire Token. Determine on which squares of your territory you can place this Fire Token and then place it on the valid square of your choice, following the Fire Rules.
Fire Rules
- A Fire Token is launched from the Volcano square and must land on an empty square without another Fire Token and without a printed flame icon on the terrain.
- A Fire Token cannot land on a square with Volcano terrain.
- A Fire Token can be launched in any direction or combination of directions. A Fire Token can move diagonally to land.
- It is allowed to cross empty pieces of territory (holes left by the placement of pieces).
- Once landed, the Fire Token will not move again for the remainder of the game.
If you cannot land your Fire Token on a square following the Fire Rules, then it must be discarded (back into the box). It will no longer be used in this game.
2. Choose a New Domino
Place your Tribal Chief on a domino from the new row of dominoes that does not yet have another Tribal Chief on it.
Totem Mode Specific Actions
After including a domino in your territory, if you have the largest quantity of a type of resource compared to other players, take the Totem piece that corresponds to that type. If another player already has that Totem, take it from them. Ties are not considered; you only take the Totem if you exceed the quantity of resources of the other players.
Beware of fires! If a flame lands on a square containing a Resource, then that Resource will be destroyed. Discard the Resource, placing it in the box, as it will no longer be used for the rest of the game.
IMPORTANT: If you cease to be the largest possessor of a type of resource in your territory (because some player has collected more resources or as a consequence of the flames from a volcano), pass the Totem to the new largest possessor of that resource. If there is a tie in this determination, then you can choose which of the tied players to give the totem to.
Tribe Mode Specific Actions
Recruit a Cave Dweller
After Choosing a New Domino, you can:
- Spend any 2 different Resources you possess in your territory to recruit one of the Cave Dwellers shown on the pieces of the Cave Board. At the beginning of each round (when a new row of dominoes is formed), fill the empty spaces on the Cave Board so that there are 4 available pieces again.
- OR
- Spend 4 different Resources you possess in your territory to recruit one of the Cave Dwellers that are in the face-down pile of pieces. Search the pile for the desired Cave Dweller, and once you have chosen it, shuffle the remaining pieces and stack them again on the board, face down.
Discard the Resources spent to recruit a Cave Dweller, returning them to the box.
Place the chosen Cave Dweller on a square of your choice that is not a Volcano, does not contain a printed flame icon, Fire Token, or Wood Resource. You do not need to place the Cave Dweller on a square from which you just removed a Wood Resource to pay for it.
A terrain with a Cave Dweller still counts as terrain normally.
Beware of fires! If a flame lands on a square containing a Cave Dweller, then that piece is destroyed. Discard it, placing it back in the box, as it will no longer be used in this game.
Types of Cave Dwellers
There are a total of 22 Cave Dwellers:
- 14 Hunter-Gatherers
- 8 Warriors
Hunter-Gatherers can yield comfort points, depending on the different resources surrounding them (vertically, horizontally, and diagonally). Only Wood Resources count as surrounding resources for the purpose of scoring Hunter-Gatherers at the end of the game. The printed resource icons on the dominoes are only there to indicate which Resource should be placed there when the domino is first opened.
- The Hunter yields you 3 points per mammoth found in the 8 squares surrounding them.
- The Fisher Child yields you 3 points per fish found in the 8 squares surrounding them.
- The Gatherer yields you 4 points per mushroom found in the 8 squares surrounding them.
- The Sculptor yields you 5 points per flint found in the 8 squares surrounding them.
- The Painter yields you 2 points for each Wood Resource found in the 8 squares surrounding them.
- The Fire Lady yields you 1 point per flame icon found in the 8 squares surrounding them (considering Fire Tokens and those printed on the pieces).
- The Shaman yields you 2 points per Cave Dweller piece in the 8 squares surrounding them.
Warriors yield points as a group. A group of Warriors consists of Warrior pieces connected to each other vertically or horizontally. A group yields you a number of comfort points equal to the number of Warriors in the group multiplied by the group's total power. The total power is the sum of the numbers shown on the Warrior pieces. A single warrior yields you their power in comfort points.
- 4 Small Warriors, each with a short spear with power 1.
- 3 Warrior Amazons, each with
