About the game

What you do in a play session

Kingsburg (Second Edition) puts you in the shoes of a border province governor in a realm under siege by monstrous hordes. Your goal is to sway the king's advisers to secure gold, wood, stone and soldiers, expanding your lands and bolstering defenses. Each game spans five years, or 20 turns. Every year features three production phases – gathering, building and recruiting – and every fourth turn brings winter, when all players fight an invading army in a solo showdown (no cooperation).

The core mechanic is worker placement with dice: you roll a set of colored dice representing your influence and place them on members of the Royal Council. Each adviser awards different resources or bonuses such as troops, victory points, or special abilities. The player with the lowest total dice value chooses first, tempering the impact of a bad roll. Even an unlucky roll can be mitigated by clever placement.

Tech trees add a layer of progression, letting you unlock advanced structures and abilities that improve production or defense. Deciding how to allocate resources between city upgrades and army recruitment is a constant tension, and the 90‑120 minute playtime keeps the game brisk. The components feature beautifully illustrated colored dice and a thematic medieval‑fantasy board.

The box includes six expansion modules, with this edition adding Module #6 (Alternate Advisor Rewards) as a bonus. With a light weight of about 2.5/5, it appeals to fans of resource management, worker placement, and a dash of dice luck, all wrapped in a medieval‑fantasy setting.
