About the game
What you do in a play session
In L'Empereur each match is a penguin dash from the colony, across the icy ocean, and back to the nest. On your turn you pick a card next to your penguin, flip it, and move the penguin onto it. The card shows a color; if it matches your penguin's color you get an extra immediate move, otherwise your turn ends. After moving you place a white or black token on a still‑face‑down card. When a penguin lands on a card with a white token it immediately gains an extra turn; landing on a black token stops its movement. Cards without penguins stay face‑down, hiding their color until revealed. If your penguin reaches a card of its own color already occupied by other penguins, you must bring them along, forming a little feathered convoy. The goal is to be the first to bring your penguin back to the colony, using memory to recall where colors lie and tactics to block opponents. The game runs 15‑25 minutes, supports 2‑4 players, and carries a light weight (1/5), making it perfect for families and newcomers. Though simple, the blend of memory, path‑choice and the risk of black tokens creates enough tension to keep everyone engaged until the final sprint. If you enjoy quick, thematic games that demand a dash of strategy without the headache, L'Empereur will win you over.
