Objective of the Game

Welcome to the thrilling world of Long Shot: The Dice Game! Get ready to bet on horses, influence races, and make some serious cash. Your ultimate goal is to be the player with the most Victory Points (VPs) at the end of the game. Will you play it safe or go for the long shot? Only one way to find out!

Preparation (Setup)

Setting up your racetrack for Long Shot: The Dice Game is quick and easy. Let's get those horses to the starting line!

  1. Each player receives a player sheet and a writing utensil. This is where you'll track your bets, horse ownership, and other crucial decisions.
  2. Place the main game board in the center of your playing area, easily accessible to all players.
  3. Shuffle the Development Cards and place them face down in their designated spot on the game board.
  4. Place the Betting Tokens and Horse Tokens near the board, ready to be used.
  5. Ensure the dice (both the D6 and D4) are within reach.

The Game Turn

A turn in Long Shot: The Dice Game is a dynamic sequence of rolling dice, moving horses, and making strategic choices. Here's how it unfolds:

  1. Roll the Dice: The active player rolls both the D6 and the D4.
  2. Move the Horse: The horse corresponding to the number rolled on the D6 moves forward a number of spaces equal to the result of the D4.
  3. Take Actions: After the horse moves, all players, starting with the active player and proceeding clockwise, can choose to take one of the following actions:
    • Place a Bet: You can bet on any horse, even if you don't own it. Mark your bet on your player sheet.
    • Buy a Horse: You can purchase ownership of an available horse. Owning horses gives you special benefits!
    • Use a Development Card: If you have any Development Cards, you can play one for its effect.
    • Activate a Horse Ability: If you own a horse, you can activate its unique ability.
    • Pass: If you don't want to or can't take any other action, you can simply pass.

This sequence repeats until the game end condition is met.

End of Game and Scoring

The race is on, but it won't last forever! Here's how the game concludes and how you'll tally up your winnings:

The game ends immediately when any horse crosses the finish line. Once a horse crosses the finish line, no more actions are taken, and scoring begins.

Players then calculate their total Victory Points (VPs) from various sources:

  • Winning Bets: Players earn VPs for successful bets on horses that finish in the top three. The closer your horse finishes to first place, the more VPs you'll get!
  • Horse Ownership: Owning horses that perform well in the race will also grant you VPs.
  • Development Cards: Some Development Cards provide end-game VPs.
  • Remaining Money: Any unspent money you have at the end of the game will convert into VPs.

The player with the highest total Victory Points is declared the ultimate racing tycoon and the winner of Long Shot: The Dice Game!

Tips for Winning

Ready to dominate the racetrack? Here are a couple of pointers to get you started:

  • Diversify Your Bets: Don't put all your eggs in one basket! Spreading your bets across multiple horses can mitigate risk and increase your chances of a payout.
  • Strategic Horse Ownership: Consider which horses to buy carefully. Owning a horse gives you access to its unique ability, which can be a powerful tool to influence the race in your favor.
