About the game
What you do in a play session
Turf Horse Racing is Knizia's classic blend of betting, bluffing and horse racing on a 40‑space track. The round opens with players placing wagers on horses as they are drawn from the deck. Each horse card displays four symbols – jockey's hat, boot, horseshoe and horse head – and each symbol has a number showing how many spaces that horse moves when the corresponding face appears on the die. The horse head appears three times on the die, giving it a 50% chance; its value ranges from 1 to 7 depending on the horse, so Raven Beauty can move up to 7 spaces while Roamin' Emporer only moves 1. The twist lies in the other three symbols: their numbers can be wildly higher, allowing a “slow” horse to surge 20 spaces on a lucky roll. On a player’s turn they roll the die and pick which horse to advance – a good roll lets them push a horse they backed, a bad roll may benefit an opponent. After the race, points go to the first, second and third place finishers and to the player who guessed the winning double. The game mixes wagering strategy with the thrill of a race, lasting about an hour for 3‑6 players.
