About the game
What you do in a play session
Get your pencil and paper ready, because The Great Races is one of those nostalgic classics that proves not everything needs to be complicated to be fun! Released back in 1974, this dice racing game is pure adrenaline in spreadsheet form. The idea is simple: each player rolls four dice and tries to form pairs. Each line on your score sheet represents a different race, where you mark progress for each possible dice sum value (from 2 to 12). Upon completing a race segment for a specific value, you mark it on your sheet. Whoever finishes all segments of a race first wins that particular race. The entire game ends when all races have their winners decided.
It's a game that somewhat resembles the famous Can't Stop, by the same designer Sid Sackson, but with its own rules and a retro charm. Here, the action is more direct: one roll per turn, without the tension of deciding whether to risk it one more time. Points are also earned differently, with the winner taking the best and the second place finisher securing a portion. If you enjoy quick games that mix a bit of luck with spreadsheet-filling strategy and don't mind a more vintage look, The Great Races can be a great choice for a light and nostalgic session.
