Step by step

Game Objective

Throughout the Atlantic Forest, the diverse species of golden lion tamarins are threatened with extinction. In Mico-Leão, you must create the perfect sanctuary to protect them! The player who builds the best sanctuary, accumulating the highest score, wins the game.

Setup

To set up the game, follow these steps:

  1. Set aside a space in front of you to build your sanctuary.
  2. Shuffle all the game cards (which have golden lion tamarins on one side and branches on the other) and lay them out on the table in a circle, with the golden lion tamarin side facing up.
  3. Place the game box between the first and last card laid out on the table, forming part of the circle.
  4. Whoever most recently ate a banana starts the game.

Game Flow

The game proceeds in turns. The game ends when all game cards have been chosen and placed in the sanctuaries.

Actions and How to Play

On your turn, you must choose one of the game cards laid out on the table and add it to your sanctuary. The rulebook does not detail other available actions.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends when all game cards have been chosen and placed in the sanctuaries. To calculate your final score, follow these steps:

  1. Each food on a branch can only be used to feed 1 golden lion tamarin in the same area as the branch. Remove golden lion tamarins that do not have enough food.
  2. Remove branches that are left without golden lion tamarins.
  3. Earn the score indicated on the golden lion tamarin cards that remain in your sanctuary.
  4. Earn +4 points for each sanctuary area with 2 golden lion tamarins of the same species (Species Bonus - SB).
  5. Earn +2 points for each sanctuary area with one male and one female, regardless of species (Gender Bonus - GB).
  6. Lose 1 point for each card removed from your sanctuary in steps 1 and 2.

Whoever has the highest total score has built the best sanctuary for the golden lion tamarins and wins the game! In case of a tie, the player who took the last turn wins.

Solo Mode

When playing Mico-Leão alone, your challenge will be to build 2 separate sanctuaries and ensure both are suitable for golden lion tamarins. Follow the base game rules, but with these changes:

  • During setup, set aside 2 spaces in front of you to represent the 2 different sanctuaries.
  • In each round, you must place the card in 1 of the sanctuaries alternately: in odd-numbered rounds, place the card in the left sanctuary, and in even-numbered rounds, place it in the right one.
  • At the end of the game, score each sanctuary individually. Each sanctuary must have at least 3 tamarins, and your final result is determined by the score difference between the sanctuaries.

The scoring ranking in solo mode is:

  • 0 pts.: Tamarin Guardian
  • 1-2 pts.: Atlantic Forest Protector
  • 3-4 pts.: Potential Enthusiast
  • 5-6 pts.: Little Monkey Fan
  • 7+ pts.: You're a Big Banana!
