About the game
Step back into the mid-1800s, the golden age of whaling, and transform the Massachusetts town of New Bedford into a thriving hub of this lucrative industry. Gather resources to construct new buildings, unlocking unique actions, and launch ships on daring voyages to hunt whales. The further you send your vessels, the better the catch, but wait too long and the whales become scarcer and harder to find. And don't forget to pay your crew when they return! This medium-weight game demands a careful balance of time management and strategic timing. Over twelve rounds, players take turns placing two workers at a time to perform basic actions like gathering food, wood, and bricks, selling goods, building structures, or docking ships. Constructing buildings is a smart move, as they not only grant end-game points but also offer exclusive action spaces – and anyone using your buildings must pay you a fee! The whale hunt itself is a game within a game: you decide how far to send your ships. At the end of each round, ships return, and you draw whale tokens. Those furthest out get first pick of the most valuable sperm whales, but as rounds progress, these opportunities dwindle. Upon reaching shore, a portion of the profits (the 'lay') must be paid to secure your catch. After twelve rounds, the player with the most points from buildings, whales, and leftover money wins!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the complexity of New Bedford?
New Bedford is considered a medium-weight game. The basic rules are easy to grasp, but the strategic decisions regarding worker placement, building, and whale hunting require careful planning.
How long does a game typically last?
A game of New Bedford usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the player count and how familiar everyone is with the game.
Is it a good game for solo play?
Yes! New Bedford includes rules for solo play, allowing you to manage the town and whale hunt against a simulated opponent.
What do players do in the game?
Players use their workers to gather resources, build structures that grant new actions, sell goods, and send ships out to hunt whales. The goal is to accumulate the most points.
Is player interaction high?
Interaction is mostly indirect. Players compete for action spaces and priority in whale hunting, and can use buildings constructed by others by paying a fee.
Do I need to know English to play?
