About the game
What you do in a play session
New England Railways is the second title in the Early Railways series, released by Winsome Games in 2000. Set in the New England region of the United States, the game captures the scramble for control over the rail routes that connect production towns to export ports. The core mechanic is a bidding system: players compete for construction rights, using action cards and money to secure the right to build tracks. Once a rail line is in place, the “Pick‑up and Deliver” mechanic takes over: each player selects a shipment of goods, picks them up in a source city, and transports them along their newly built track to a destination city, earning income at the end of each round. The experience is very similar to Lancashire Railways, but the map and trade points are unique, offering a different planning challenge. The game supports 2‑6 players, lasts 90‑120 minutes, and delivers a moderate level of complexity that blends auction strategy with delivery logistics. For fans of economic themes, trains, and transport simulation, New England Railways is a solid pick that brings the nostalgia of the American railroad era with well‑balanced mechanics. The set includes 60 action cards, 40 commodity cards, 12 track pieces, 6 locomotive sets, and a 60 × 40 cm board depicting the region. Each player receives a set of track pieces and a control board to track routes and earnings. The artwork has a vintage feel, with illustrations reminiscent of 1880s railroad maps, enhancing the historical atmosphere.
