About the game

What you do in a play session

Railways of Nippon is an independent 2‑to‑4‑player spin‑off that brings the charm of the Nippon expansion for Railways of the World, but with its own rules and a brand‑new map. The setting takes place during the Meiji era, when Japan was rapidly industrialising and railways were emerging as symbols of progress and power. You take on the role of a railway baron, trying to build the most profitable network while competing with rivals for valuable routes and transport contracts.

The game blends three classic railway mechanics: a bidding phase for Baron cards, route building on a hexagonal board, and a pickup‑and‑delivery system for goods. At the start, each player receives a set of Baron cards that can be auctioned to secure routes or gain production bonuses. Then you lay tracks on the hexes, connecting cities and creating paths for your locomotives. Operation cards allow you to move trains, swap cargo, or earn extra cash, adding a tactical layer to the play.

Because Japan’s geography offers limited expansion space, competition for territory is fierce. Planning ahead, blocking opponents’ paths, and timing your operation cards are key to dominating the board. The game also introduces bank loans and the need to balance your budget: taking too many bonds can backfire in the end. Final scoring combines cash, routes built, goods delivered, and end‑game bonuses, giving players multiple routes to victory.

The components are solid: high‑quality track pieces, detailed train tokens, illustrated cards, and money tokens. Playtime sits between 90 and 120 minutes, making it suitable for afternoon or evening game nights. For fans of strategy games focused on logistics and head‑to‑head competition, Railways of Nippon delivers an engaging experience that demands careful attention to detail and a fair amount of strategic patience.
