About the game
Nightmare: The Video Board Game (also known as Atmosfear) is a 1990s classic that blends a traditional board with a VHS tape that drives the game’s tempo. Each player takes on a spooky character and must gather six keys, one from each region of the board, before racing to the center – the "Nightmare Square". The dreaded Gatekeeper appears on screen at random intervals, issuing challenges, cursing players, or even halting a turn. The tape acts as a real‑time timer: if the 60 minutes run out, the Gatekeeper wins and everyone loses.

The core mechanics revolve around dice rolling and the "roll/spin and move" system, which decides how many spaces a player moves each turn. Meanwhile, the real‑time countdown creates constant tension, as every second wasted can be fatal. The game supports 3‑6 players and typically lasts about an hour, perfect for groups that enjoy fast action, scares, and lots of interaction.

In 2022 a 30th‑anniversary edition was released, swapping the VHS for a streaming or downloadable video while preserving the original feel, and adding deluxe components, extra cards, and a new graphic‑novel backstory called "The Lore of the Other Side" that expands on the Gatekeeper’s mythos. If you love games that combine audiovisual elements, macabre humor and a race against the clock, Nightmare delivers a uniquely thrilling experience that still makes people scream (and laugh) decades later.
