About the game
What you do in a play session
Nightmare Cathedral is a strategy board game that blends area control, worker placement, and a unique mechanic of following other players’ actions. Set in a nightmarish cathedral that slowly rises in the center of the board, players act as Dreamers who must navigate a day‑night cycle, gather resources, build fortifications, and climb the ritual track. The game is played in two phases: first, the cathedral is constructed piece by piece; once completed, the second phase brings in a wave of nightmares that devour units unless players can control them. Each turn, the active player moves their Dreamer to a Day space, triggers the associated action card, and other players can react. The goal is to dominate the map, satisfy the ritual track, or outlast the time track. The game supports 1–4 players and takes roughly an hour per session. Components include a modular board, detailed miniatures, action cards, a ritual track, and a time track. The design relies heavily on the “Follow” mechanic, allowing players to chain reactions, and on “Area Majority / Influence” to determine control over key zones. Variable set‑up keeps each game fresh, while worker‑placement elements add a layer of resource management. Nightmare Cathedral is ideal for fans of horror aesthetics, miniature‑heavy games, and those who enjoy tactical depth with a touch of unpredictability. Its pacing is steady, with a moderate level of complexity that rewards careful planning and foresight. The artwork, inspired by the late Polish surrealist Zdzisław Beksiński, adds a haunting atmosphere that permeates the gameplay. Overall, it offers a compelling mix of strategy, narrative, and miniature play for those willing to dive into a dreamscape of terror.
