About the game

What you do in a play session

Pay Dirt: Spectral Mini‑Expansion arrives as a tiny but spooky upgrade to the classic mining game of the Old West. The core idea is straightforward: add haunted workers and equipment that can spook (or hinder) everyone. Each new pawn comes with a supernatural effect – some may block you from placing workers in certain spots, while others grant eerie bonuses if you can keep them under control. The same goes for the gear: there are silver pistols, cursed lanterns and even an old mine cart that rattles with ghostly noises.

Worker placement works as before, but now you must weigh the risk of being "possessed" by a specter that might cancel your action or force an unexpected swap. Auction and open drafting still run as usual, yet the spectral items enter the auction as special cards, creating fresh bidding strategies. Simultaneous action selection also gets a twist: when you pick your action you may have to declare whether you accept or reject the ghost's influence, which can shift the game in an instant.

All this keeps the game light (2.75/5), so it won’t overwhelm newcomers, but it adds a tasty horror flavor for those who love a little chill with their gold rush. If you’ve already played Pay Dirt, you’ll find the expansion a fun way to freshen up a session without a steep learning curve. Plus, as a Kickstarter perk, some components feature exclusive artwork that only backers received, giving your game box extra swagger. In short, Spectral Mini‑Expansion is the dash of terror that makes the race for gold even more thrilling.
