About the game
In Puerto Rico, you take on the role of a colonial governor, tasked with developing your island and accumulating victory points. The game revolves around a production and trade cycle: plant crops like corn, indigo, tobacco, sugar, and coffee, harvest them, and then sell or ship them to Europe. With the doubloons earned, you can construct buildings that enhance your production, offer special abilities, or generate more points. But remember, both plantations and buildings need colonists to function! The big highlight of Puerto Rico is its role selection system. In each round, players choose a role (such as Builder, Trader, or Captain), and all participants perform the action associated with it. The player who chose the role gains a small privilege – for example, a discount when building. Unchosen roles become more attractive in the following round, gaining doubloons, which encourages rotation and strategic use of all options. Victory points come from various sources: buildings you own, goods shipped, and even large buildings that are manned. A curious detail is that shipping tokens are kept secret, increasing tension at the end of the game, as no one knows the exact score of their opponent. This uncertainty forces you to think very carefully before each move, especially as the game approaches its conclusion. Get ready to manage your resources, optimize your farm, and build the most prosperous city in Puerto Rico!
