About the game
What you do in a play session
In the late 19th century Japan opened its first railway line between Shimbashi and Yokohama, sparking a railway frenzy that stretched across the following decades. In Railway Boom each player takes the role of a magnate who emerged during the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa eras, trying to turn a modest startup into a renowned railway empire. The game blends resource management – money, materials, science and coal – with the construction of networks that link strategic Japanese cities. Each round starts with an auction where you bid for trains, development cards or construction rights; the highest bidder wins the item and also sets the turn order for the next phase. Throughout the game you generate income from completed routes, invest in research that yields powerful cards, and keep your trains fueled, because a coal‑starved locomotive loses efficiency. At the end, besides points for routes and profit, end‑game bonuses reward the longest network, the most cities served and the best collection of development cards. The board depicts a detailed map of Japan with real cities and historic lines, while components – miniature trains, resource tokens and illustrated cards – bring the industrial era to life. With a playing time of 60‑120 minutes, Railway Boom appeals to both strategic gamers and railway history fans, offering depth without overwhelming complexity. The experience is one of careful planning, exciting bids, and the constant feeling of building a moving empire across Japan's rails.
