Step by step

Objective of the Game

In Revive: Call of the Abyss, players take on the roles of different tribes seeking to learn from the Scyphoz, ancient beings living in giant lakes formed by glacial meltwater. Your goal is to settle near these lakes, honor the Scyphoz, and complete the journeys they prepare for you. The player who best serves and learns from the abyss to accumulate the most points wins.

Setup

Follow these steps to prepare your game:

  1. Board and Tracks: Assemble the devotion track and place it along the edge of the game board, parallel to the point track. Place a random large location tile next to the devotion track.
  2. Card Decks: Shuffle the Scyphoz cards and place them in a facedown deck. Shuffle the journey cards and place them in a facedown deck; reveal the top 3 journey cards to form a display.
  3. Area Tiles and Lakes: Place the 5 starting area tiles on the board. Pick 3 random area tiles from the remaining ones and return them to the box. Shuffle the 3 lake tiles with the remaining area tiles. Place the lake tiles face up on the board, ensuring they are not adjacent to one another. Ensure a path of non-blocked spaces exists from the chasm to each large location in the corners.
  4. Player Setup: Each player receives a pawn of their color and places it on space 0 on the devotion track. Players also receive a tribe board.
  5. Components: Distribute leech markers (one to each other player) if playing with the Cordycephians.

Game Flow

The game proceeds through turns where players perform actions to advance their civilization and devotion. While the specific turn order is not detailed in the provided text, the game involves managing an active area and a resting area for cards, and utilizing a switch action. Players may also hibernate to reset certain components or gain resources.

Actions and How to Play

During your turn, you can perform various actions and utilize specific mechanics:

Card Actions

Players play cards from their active area into card slots. Scyphoz cards can be played as citizen cards. When playing a Scyphoz card, you must choose a color (gray, green, or yellow) for it to count as throughout that turn to trigger slot modules. At the end of the game, you may choose a color for each Scyphoz card for end-game bonuses.

The Switch Action

The switch action can be used to:

  • Gain a basic resource.
  • Copy the top effect of another player's card.
  • Start a journey: Return a citizen or Scyphoz card from your active area to the game box. The color of the discarded card must match the color of the journey card taken from the display.
  • Use specific tribe abilities (depending on the tribe's rules).

Hibernation

Hibernation allows players to perform various restorative actions, such as:

  • Moving cards from the active area to the resting area to gain their top effects.
  • Resetting a switch token.
  • Regaining energy or resources.
  • Flipping the circadian tile (for specific tribes).

Building and Populating

Players can build small buildings or large buildings on area tiles. Building next to a lake provides specific rewards. Players can also place population figures on large location tiles or area tiles.

Converting Points

Whenever you score regular points or devotion points, you may convert them:

  • 2:1 ratio: Convert 2 points to advance 1 space on the other track.
  • 1:1 ratio: Convert 1 point to advance 1 space on the other track.

Journeys

To complete a journey card, you must meet one of the three requirements listed on the card. Completing a journey does not count as an action. Once completed, the card is placed face down and provides a flask symbol for scoring.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends when the triggers defined by the specific game mode are met. At the end of the game, points are tallied as follows:

  • Devotion Points: All devotion points are added to your regular points. If you exceed 25 devotion points, continue counting from space 26 on the regular point track.
  • Artifacts: Score points for artifact cards according to the categories on the card.
  • Journeys: Each completed journey card counts as 1 flask symbol.
  • Lakes: Score 2 points for each building type (small/large) you have adjacent to each lake.
  • Scyphoz: Score 3 points for each of your Scyphoz cards.
  • Resources: 1 point for every 5 remaining resources.
  • Other: Points from large locations, machine tracks, and unlocked technologies.
