About the game
What you do in a play session
Sails of Glory is a series of games that brings the feel of Age‑of‑Sails naval combat (1650‑1815) to the tabletop. Built on the Wings of Glory engine, it blends detailed miniatures, maneuver cards, and board‑game mechanics to craft tactical sea battles. Each player gets a deck of cards describing their ship's possible maneuvers – arrows placed in front of the miniature and then followed by the actual movement. Options change with wind direction and, in advanced rules, the type of sail used, so every choice mirrors the real challenges of commanding a large sailing vessel.
All cards are chosen in secret and revealed simultaneously, using the Simultaneous Action Selection mechanic. This creates tension, as you only learn opponents' intents at the moment of reveal. After ships have moved, the firing phase begins: cannons fire from the sides of the miniatures at targets within range, measured with rulers. The Action Queue system ensures movement and firing resolve in a logical order, simulating the cadence of a real battle.
The inaugural series focuses on the Napoleonic era, but the modular design allows future expansions into periods like the Age of Discovery or even antiquity, should the line succeed. Components include 1/1000 painted miniatures, maneuver cards, measuring rulers, and damage markers. A 2.9 BGG weight signals accessible rules, while a 45‑minute playtime keeps games brisk. Perfect for fans of historical wargames, miniatures, and simultaneous decision‑making, Sails of Glory offers a visually striking and tactically deep experience.
