About the game

What you do in a play session

Shadows of Malice is a cooperative game for 1‑8 players set in the Realm of Aethos, where the shadow demon Xulthûl seeks to gain a physical form. Players control heroic avatars, each wielding unique Light abilities, and must locate and unseal hidden Wells of Light hidden in strongholds across a modular hex map. Each well is guarded by a powerful Guardian; only by defeating it does a player learn whether the well is still pure or has fallen to Darkness. Meanwhile, Xulthûl's Shadows appear at random locations, trying to corrupt a well and hasten the demon's emergence. If a well is corrupted, the game shifts from prevention to a direct battle against Xulthûl. The board is modular and hex‑based, providing a fresh layout each play, while movement follows a hex grid. Dice rolling, variable phase order, and asymmetric player powers add tactical depth. Players can trade potions, treasure and soulshards, hire services from cities and mystics, and use those resources to defeat Guardians. The game blends exploration, combat and light RPG elements, with a moderate complexity (weight 3.2/5) and a playtime of about two hours. Perfect for groups who love epic narratives, strategic cooperation, and a dash of randomness.
