Game Objective
In Amazon Survival, players are explorers who have parachuted into the Amazon rainforest. The main goal is to survive, collecting resources and dealing with the dangers of the jungle, while attempting to complete an individual mission with 3 items and, finally, reaching the rescue point in the center of the board.
The game ends when someone reaches the rescue point or on the 16th round. The winner is determined by the final point count, which includes items and resources obtained, the completion of the individual mission, and bonuses for reaching the rescue point.
Setup
Consult the manual for details regarding this section.
Game Flow
The game lasts a maximum of 16 rounds, which is equivalent to 4 days in the forest. A phase marker on the board determines the sequence of rounds. Each round is equivalent to a part of the day (morning, afternoon, dusk, and night).
Every three rounds (Rounds 3, 7, and 11, which are dusk phases), all players must seek a green area (forest) to set up camp, eat, and rest.
The game ends if someone reaches the rescue point or on the 16th round. When one of these triggers occurs, the round is completed and the count of items and resources obtained is performed.
Actions and How to Play
Each round, players must make a decision. The possible actions per turn are:
Change Direction
Before starting your turn and before opening the cards, the player may rotate their explorer, changing direction. This alters the card options (river or forest) in front of them.
Board Movement and Card Selection
Depending on each player's position, three cards (river or forest) are opened, equivalent to moving to the three areas in front of them: left, right, or forward. In the igarapé (stream) area, the player can choose between river or forest.
A player cannot occupy the same space as another. In this case, the path is blocked and no cards are opened for that direction.
Resources (water, wood, food) always allow movement in the chosen direction/card.
Possible Actions per Turn
- Choose action / direction: The player chooses one of the cards opened in front of them to move.
- Collect resources: Take a direct resource (water, food, wood, canoe, or card).
- Use item: Use food, wood, life, card, canoe, or muiraquitã.
- Risk on the dice: To gain defense and/or movement, or to record threats or endangered animals.
- Do not move: Do not choose any card.
Extra Movement
A player can make a second movement, opening only one card. This can be done using:
- 1 food.
- The canoe (only in the river area).
- The Shaman's magic card (for three rounds).
It is not possible to move backward or not move using extra movement. A player cannot make 2 extra movements in the same turn. When the Storm card is active (for 3 rounds), extra movement is not possible.
Card Types
- Forest and River Cards: May contain animals that cause 1 point of damage or 0.5 points of damage. Using the wood/fire resource allows, in some cases, to win the prize without using dice. There are 3 types of forest threats and 4 types of endangered animals. If you manage to record an image of one of them, the player earns a seal.
- Magic Cards (Full Moon): These are opened during the Full Moon phases (8th and 12th rounds). They can be positive or negative, or require special defense items. Some have an immediate effect, others for the next round, and some can be kept. The player with the most Sun seals (forest threats and endangered animals) receives 2 magic cards and chooses 1, discarding the other. Other players receive only 1 card.
- Iara Card: Provides defense against all animals and can be used at any time.
- Muiraquitã Card: It is a River card with magical powers and is worth points at the end.
Camping
On Rounds 3, 7, and 11 (dusk/night), all players must camp. During this stage, weather/environment condition cards are opened, which determine the resources to be paid (food and/or water and/or fire).
- In the 4th round (night), anyone not in a green area (without setting up camp) loses 1 life [-1].
- If the player is in the canoe, they lose 0.5 life [-0.5] (injury).
- The player who does not have the resource required by the camping card loses 1 life [-1] for each item.
During the Full Moon Phase, before the magic cards, normal camping cards are opened and players pay the required resources.
Scoring Base
Each player receives a Scoring Base with the color of their explorer. They start the game with 1 medical kit and 6 life points. Survival items such as water, food, and wood must be collected. The medical kit can be exchanged for 2 life if the player loses all 6 life points.
Individual Mission
At the start of the game, each player receives an Objective Card indicating their main task: obtaining 3 different items (photographic record of animals and/or threats and/or earning special seals). Each completed objective item is worth 2 points, for a maximum of 6 in the final count.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when:
- The first player reaches the rescue point in the center of the board. The round is completed, and other players may also reach the rescue point and obtain the same scoring prize.
- No player reaches the rescue point by the 16th round. The game ends after the last player of that round takes their turn.
Then, the final point count is performed to determine the winner. The final sum is made according to each player's Scoring Base:
- All resources are worth points.
- The forest threats and endangered animals items only have value for the objective: 2 points for each completed item (1 objective = 2 points, 2 objectives = 4 points, 3 objectives = 6 points). Having extra seals of this type does not count for points.
- If a player reaches the rescue point, they gain an extra bonus of 4 points.
- Some unused magic cards are also worth points (Iara and Muiraquitã).
In case of a tie, the tie-breaking criteria are:
- First to reach the rescue point.
- Life index.
- Forest Threat and Endangered Animal seals.
- Special Cards.
Tips for Winning
- Save resources: Every 3 rounds you must camp and have food, water, or wood.
- Change direction: Always look for the best path. Changing your explorer's direction before opening the cards can offer better options.
- Use resources instead of dice: In some turns, to obtain items/resources, there is an option to use resources instead of risking the dice. For example, food for Endangered Animals, life for Forest Threats, Muiraquitã Card for Courage Seal, and wood/fire for some food items.
- Complete your Mission: Try to complete the 3 items of your mission to guarantee the 6 extra points at the end.
- Strategy for the Rescue Point: If you are near the rescue point, try to arrive first to win the prize. If you are far away, focus on accumulating points in other ways.
