About the game

What you do in a play session

Hey there, aspiring wizard! It's almost time for the final exam at Cliffspire Academy, and your challenge is to create a spell scroll that will blow everyone's minds. The more impressive and varied your spells, the higher your grade. Of course, it's not all rainbows and unicorns: your cauldron is a bit out of tune, your inscribing quill is on the fritz, and to top it all off, what the heck does 'Aveum' even mean again?

'Spellcraft Academy' is a super compact solo roll-and-write game played on a grid of letters. The idea is to roll a die to navigate this grid, selecting letters and copying them onto a separate, blank grid. You score points for each complete word you manage to form, choosing from a magical word bank. These words are categorized as 'aspects,' 'elements,' or 'methods,' and the big trick to racking up major points is combining them – meaning, making one word use letters that are already part of another.

The game continues until you run out of space to inscribe more letters on your grid. Then, it's just a matter of tallying up the points and seeing if you passed your magic test or if you'll need to retake the course. Released as part of the April 2018 Board Game of the Month Club package, it's the perfect pick for anyone looking for a quick and fun challenge in the world of magic, without needing anyone else at the table.
