About the game
What you do in a play session
Subbuteo, known in Brazil as Pelebol, was born in England in 1947, invented by Peter Adolph from an earlier tabletop game called New Footy. The original set used paper figures with plastic bases, but soon evolved into 3‑D miniatures of footballers mounted on round bases. The game is played on a cloth "pitch" (often a blanket) marked with chalk, where two teams of miniatures compete by flicking the bases with a finger to move the ball. Each flick can make a player kick, pass or dribble, reproducing almost every situation of a real match: possession, passing, corners, throw‑ins, fouls and even cards. The basic box contains two metal goals, a plastic ball and optional accessories like cheering fans, referees and stadium lights. In the 1960s, the introduction of 3‑D figures sparked a boom, reaching its peak in the 1970s with over 300 different teams – from clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool to World Cup national sides – available. Today collectors still hunt for club kits, stadiums and rare pieces, while the game remains a fast‑paced test of dexterity and tactical skill for two players, with 20‑minute matches.
