About the game
What you do in a play session
Table Battles is a lightweight combat system that brings historic clashes to the tabletop in a highly abstracted yet entertaining way. Each player gets Unit cards representing real formations – from medieval knights to Revolutionary War regiments – and a pool of dice. In the early phases you roll the dice and assign them to the cards, respecting the specific results or combos each unit requires. When you decide to strike, you remove the allocated dice, activate the Unit and attack an enemy formation, removing the wooden tokens that stand for casualties. The opponent can then screen the attack, counter‑attack, or soak it with a strategic reserve; in most cases they must do so if able. This creates a cat‑and‑mouse tension where both sides bluff, look for openings and, when the moment arrives, execute a decisive move. The base game offers eight scenarios and 84 formations, covering battles such as Bosworth (1485), Ivry (1590), Marston Moor (1644) and the Plains of Abraham (1705). Each scenario comes with its own board and pieces, but the core mechanic stays constant, making the game quick to learn and allowing 20‑minute matches. With a low weight (1.85/5) and a Print & Play format, it’s accessible to newcomers and veterans alike who enjoy fast tactical duels. While the abstraction trims historical detail, it guarantees fluid play and plenty of tension, perfect for fans of swift strategy and reliving epic moments without drowning in complexity.
