1. Objetivo do Jogo

In Teotihuacan: Late Preclassic Period, you are a priest or priestess of one of the city’s many deities. Your goal is to build and advance on the temples, the Pyramid of the Sun, and the Avenue of the Dead while collecting resources, worshippers, and special abilities. The game ends after the third Eclipse (the end of the third Season). The player with the highest total of Victory Points – earned from temple advancement, Pyramid tiles, the Avenue of the Dead, and special abilities – wins. If a player cannot advance on a temple step that grants a Special Ability, they may choose a different temple step instead, but must pay the required cost.

2. Preparação (Setup)

  1. Place the main game board face up. Next to it, place the expansion board face up.
  2. Tile board: Put the tile board next to the main board. Shuffle the Season tiles and place one random tile on the designated spot on the tile board.
  3. Action Boards: Shuffle the Action Boards (including the new Nobles (6), Architecture (7), and Development (8) boards) and place them face up on the board. The new boards replace the corresponding base‑game boards.
  4. Temple setup: Place a worshipper on the bottom step of each temple. Each player receives 2 wooden discs per color (used as Special Ability markers and Technology markers) and 4 wooden worshippers per color. The wooden discs are also used to track progress on the Pyramid track, Avenue of the Dead, and score track.
  5. Priest and Priestess tiles: Shuffle the 10 Priest and Priestess player tiles and deal 2 to each player. Each player keeps one tile and returns the other to the box. See the Appendix for the ongoing benefit of each tile.
  6. Teotibot (Solo): If playing solo, shuffle the 6 Teotibot tiles and deal 1 to Teotibot. Place one of Teotibot’s worshippers on the orange temple’s Temple Bonus tile.
  7. Decoration and Pyramid tiles: Shuffle the Decoration tiles and place 4 face‑up on the tile board, the rest face‑down. Shuffle the Pyramid tiles and place 3 face‑up on the tile board, the rest face‑down.
  8. Workers: Each player places their workers on the Action Boards according to the base‑game rules.

3. Fluxo do Jogo

The game is divided into three Seasons, each ending with an Eclipse. The active Season tile remains in effect until the next Eclipse, when it is replaced by a new random tile.

  1. Player Turn: On a player’s turn, they may perform one of the following actions:
    • Main action on any Action Board.
    • Worship at a temple (using the Worship space on the Nobles (6) board).
    • Collect Cocoa (if applicable).
    • Unlock a worker (if a reward allows).
  2. Season effects: The active Season tile may alter resource costs, worker movement, or other game aspects. Refer to the Appendix for each tile’s effect.
  3. Eclipse: At the end of each Season, perform Eclipse scoring (see Section 5). Then draw a new Season tile.

4. Ações e Como Jogar

4.1 Main Action

When you take the Main action on an Action Board, resolve it exactly as you would in the base game, with the following expansion modifications:

  • Architecture (7): Adding a Decoration tile to the Pyramid follows the normal rules. If the cell allows more than one Decoration tile, do not draw new tiles until the end of your turn.
  • Development (8): Adding a Pyramid tile follows the normal rules. If the cell allows more than one Pyramid tile, do not draw new tiles until the end of your turn.
  • Any effect that says “treat the action as if you had an additional worker” uses a virtual worker with the lowest power you have on that board.

4.2 Worship

Using the Worship space on the Nobles (6) board, you may advance a worshipper on any temple. If you advance onto a step that grants a Special Ability, choose an ability of the appropriate level (I/II/III) and place one of your Special Ability markers adjacent to it. You may never choose a lower or the same level ability twice.

4.3 Unlocking Workers

When a reward allows you to unlock a worker, choose any locked worker (anywhere) and unlock it for free.

4.4 Special Abilities

Special Abilities are granted when you advance onto a temple step that offers one. Place a Special Ability marker on the chosen ability. The ongoing benefit of each ability is explained in the Appendix. You may never choose an ability of a lower level or the same ability twice.

4.5 Teotibot (Solo)

Teotibot follows the same rules as a player, but with the following differences:

  • Teotibot does not advance on the orange temple.
  • At the start of each Eclipse, Teotibot places a Special Ability marker on the orange temple according to the Season tile number.
  • Teotibot’s actions are resolved as if it were a player, but it is not affected by certain Season tiles (1, 3, 4, 7, 8).

5. Fim de Jogo e Pontuação

The game ends after the third Eclipse. At that point, perform Eclipse scoring one final time and then calculate total Victory Points.

  • Temple advancement: Each time you advance on a temple step, you score the Victory Points indicated on that step.
  • Pyramid track: Each step on the Pyramid track is worth 5, 4, or 3 Victory Points depending on whether it is the first, second, or third Eclipse.
  • Avenue of the Dead: Each time you advance on the Avenue of the Dead, you immediately score 2 Victory Points.
  • Special Abilities: The benefit of each ability is described in the Appendix and may grant additional Victory Points.
  • Mask sets: A set of 8 different masks is worth 36 Victory Points, 9 different masks 45 Victory Points, and 10 different masks 55 Victory Points.
  • Other rewards: Any other Victory Point rewards granted by tiles, actions, or abilities are added to the total.

After all points are tallied, the player with the highest total wins. If a tie occurs, the tied players share the victory.

6. Dicas para Vencer

  • Plan your temple advancement early: The orange temple offers powerful permanent abilities, but you have limited opportunities to advance there. Use the Worship space on the Nobles (6) board to advance on the orange temple as soon as possible.
  • Leverage the new Architecture and Development boards: Adding Decoration and Pyramid tiles can give you immediate rewards and unlock further actions. Pay attention to the cost and the number of tiles you can place in a single turn.
  • Use Season tiles to your advantage: Some Season tiles reduce resource costs or allow extra worker movement. Keep an eye on the active Season tile and adjust your strategy accordingly.
