The Game of Life, first published in 1960, aims to mirror the major milestones of adult life – college, marriage, children, buying a house, career and retirement – all on a linear board that moves via a colorful spinner. Each player starts with a plastic car, chooses a path (college or straight to the workforce) and advances according to the spinner or special board spaces. Along the way you collect money tokens by working, receive bonuses for completing college, and can purchase insurance and investments, although most decisions are driven by luck. The end goal is straightforward: finish the track with the most assets. Early editions are quite ruthless, allowing players to explore every option – which can lead to big losses if luck isn’t on your side. Modern printings have softened the rules, making the game suitable for young children who can play without adult supervision. The spinner is the iconic component, replacing dice and giving the game a slightly electronic feel. The board has few intersections, but they quickly converge again, keeping the flow smooth. While luck dominates, there are moments of choice (insurance, investments, marriage) that give a sense of actually making life decisions. It’s a classic that blends light humor, nostalgia and a dash of basic financial education, perfect for relaxed family evenings or with friends who love a nostalgic throwback.
