About the game
What you do in a play session
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Party is a fast‑paced, action‑filled tabletop game for 2‑4 players that drops you straight into the opening chaos of Tolkien's classic. You become one of the thirteen dwarves storming Bilbo's cozy home, singing "The Things Bilbo Hates" while scurrying around, grabbing items, delivering them to the right spots and trying to complete verses of the song for points. The blend of Pick‑up and Deliver, Push Your Luck, Set Collection, Variable Player Powers and Worker Placement creates a smooth mix of simple tactical choices and thematic fun. Beware of pushing Bilbo’s patience too far—if he gets fed up you might end up without dinner. The game ends when all 15 verses are sung or when Thorin makes his grand entrance, and the player with the most points—basically the one who best riled up Bilbo—wins. Daniel Falconer’s artwork from Weta Workshop adds a charming visual flair to the Bag End board, and the components are clear enough for newcomers. In about 40‑60 minutes the whole family can sing loudly, laugh at the dwarves’ mishaps, and try not to be kicked out of the dining hall. It’s an excellent gateway to worker‑placement games while still giving seasoned gamers a light, thematic romp.
