About the game
What you do in a play session
In the year 2700 AD, humanity is ready to abandon Earth and venture into the far reaches of the galaxy. In The Starfarers of Catan, each of the 3‑4 players starts in a known solar system, with three planets that produce basic resources. The goal? Earn the title of Ambassador to the Galactic Council, which means colonizing distant worlds, establishing trade routes with alien cultures, and, of course, dealing with the pirates that lurk on some icy hexes.
All components are plastic: two colonies and a Space Port for each player. The Space Port builds ships that ferry new colonies and trade posts onto the hexagonal board. When the dice numbers match the numbers on adjacent planets, your colonies and ports generate resources that can be exchanged for colonizer ships, trade ships, or fleet upgrades such as cargo rings, boosters, and cannons.
The board uses a hex grid reminiscent of classic Catan, but now the sky’s the limit. Exploring unknown sectors brings surprises: ice‑covered planets that demand extra effort, or pirates ready to block your routes. Negotiation is constant – trade resources with opponents or the bank to speed up your interstellar empire. The game typically runs about two hours, has a light complexity (weight 2.6/5), and blends Catan’s familiar mechanics with the thrill of sci‑fi, perfect for fans of strategy, exploration, and a good dose of space diplomacy.
