About the game
What you do in a play session
The Ziggurat is a solo dungeon‑crawling game that blends pulp sword‑and‑sorcery storytelling with simple yet choice‑rich mechanics. You play an eternal champion, reborn across millennia, drawn to a mysterious monolith at the heart of a massive stone lattice that spans countless worlds. Each session starts with selecting a Hero and an Epic Mission, which set the main objective and give the narrative a unique flavor. The board is essentially a set of cards and a hexagonal map representing corridors, chambers and cavernous tunnels teeming with danger.
Combat is resolved through dice rolls combined with skill checks, and the outcomes can be tweaked by multi‑use cards that act as resources, events or special abilities. This card layer creates an interesting decision space, forcing you to weigh when to spend a powerful effect and when to hold it for a tougher encounter. An emergent story unfolds as mission choices, random encounters, and drawn cards shape the tale, making each incarnation of the champion feel distinct.
The game lasts about 60‑90 minutes and only requires paper, a pencil and a printable deck of cards (Print & Play). The main hurdle is language: the original text is in English and has not yet been fully translated into Portuguese, so non‑English speakers may need a translator. Despite that, the mechanics are approachable, the theme is captivating, and the feeling of uncovering an ancient cosmic secret outweighs the reading effort. If you enjoy solo challenges, dungeon exploration, and stories that evolve with each play, The Ziggurat offers an epic journey worth taking.
