About the game
What you do in a play session
Top Secret is a 1985 classic that casts players as spies navigating a network of roads and fictional cities. Each game starts with the distribution of "bags"—small briefcases holding secrets or bombs—scattered across the board. Agents, controlled by each player, move along connected paths using dice to determine how many spaces to advance. When they reach a bag, they can pick it up and return it to their headquarters, located in a corner of the board. The goal is to bring ten secrets back to the base, but there’s a twist: at least one of the first three items you return must belong to an opponent. This forces players to watch rivals’ choices and plan routes that maximize secret returns while avoiding bombs. Bombs are dangerous—they halve the number of agent pieces you have on the board, reducing your chances of completing the mission. The game blends pick‑up‑and‑deliver mechanics with the surprise element of secret unit deployment, creating tension and strategy. A typical session lasts about 60 minutes, suits 2 to 4 players, and has moderate complexity, demanding attention to detail and good memory. Top Secret was re‑themed and slightly altered in later versions, such as Spion & Spion and In Teufels Küche, but the core remains: who can manipulate information and logistics wins the race for secrecy.
