About the game
What you do in a play session
Umbra Via is an abstract strategy puzzle that blends auctions, area control, and tile placement on a 4×4 board. Each round starts with four tiles revealed, showing pieces of paths – straight, curved, or T‑shaped. You and the other players keep three wooden cubes in your player screen, secretly decide where to place them on the tiles you see, and then reveal everything at once. The tile that receives the fewest cubes wins the round and gets placed on the grid, preserving its original orientation. The real fun kicks in when, after placing a tile, all of that path’s open ends are closed (by the board edge or adjacent tiles). You then count how many cubes each player has on that route. The player with the most cubes collects “bidding cubes” from the reserve – the amount depends on the route’s length – and gets the other players’ cubes back into their bag. When someone collects all their bidding cubes, they win. The game demands careful attention, as each cube placement can swing the outcome. The floral aesthetic and gardening theme add a calm vibe, while the auction mechanic introduces tension. If you enjoy secret planning, resource competition, and a slower pace, Umbra Via is for you.
