About the game
What you do in a play session
Urban Sprawl is a 2‑to‑4 player game that abstractly models the growth of a tiny village into a bustling metropolis. Each player takes on the role of an entrepreneur, tycoon or politician, gathering wealth and prestige throughout the match. At the start of a turn you may discard Building Permit cards as "investments" to gain wealth, then you receive six Action Points (AP) which can be spent on acquiring new permits, constructing buildings, or securing an exclusive contract (Favor). Each action costs a variable amount of APs depending on the card's location on the board, which is a 12×12 square grid.
Buildings are placed on the grid and marked with wooden cubes to show each player's contribution to that zone. A building's value is determined by the combined wealth and prestige of the square it occupies. As the city expands, formerly valuable neighborhoods can decline while new centers emerge, forcing players to demolish older structures to make room for larger, better ones.
Dominating specific zones – Government, Residential, Industrial or Commercial – helps you win political offices. Each office grants a special ability and boosts your influence in elections that occur during the reset phase. Wealth and prestige payouts happen at the end of each turn, letting you fund new projects or rack up victory points.
When the game ends, a final prestige tally is performed, adding bonuses for accumulated wealth and any political offices held. The player with the highest prestige total is crowned the ultimate city architect. With an average playtime of about 180 minutes, the game delivers a deep yet approachable strategic experience that blends resource management, area control and urban planning.
