About the game
What you do in a play session
In Villagers, you become the founder of a new medieval settlement in the aftermath of the Great Plague. The disaster has left food, materials, and labor scarce, so the few survivors arriving on your road need a place to settle. Each round begins with a buying phase: you draw from the central road a number of villager cards equal to your food production. These cards bring workers with specific skills – lumberjacks, miners, weavers, artisans, and so on – and each can support two related industry stacks. During the building phase you decide which cards to place in your village, creating a tableau where resources are turned into products and then into money each market day. The goal is to boost food output, expand housing capacity, and generate income while balancing the need for tools and raw materials that only certain villagers can provide. The game blends Open Drafting (all cards are visible) with Set Collection, forcing you to assemble efficient combos of complementary workers. After the third market day, scores are tallied from money, houses built, and food surplus; the most prosperous village wins. Villagers also features a well‑designed solo mode, where a single player faces the dreaded Countess and her schemes, trying to achieve the same prosperity. Light in weight (2.2/5), rounds last 30–60 minutes and accommodate 1–5 players, making it perfect for fans of tableau building and resource management without heavy complexity.
