About the game

What you do in a play session

War of the Ring: Kings of Middle‑earth arrives as the third expansion for the celebrated War of the Ring, bringing the saga of the Free Peoples' rulers to the tabletop before the final clash with Sauron. The setting unfolds years before the War of the Ring, when the Dark Lord was already weaving shadows to weaken human, elven and dwarf leaders. In this expansion, players command iconic figures such as Theodén, Denethor, Daìn, Brand and Thranduil, each endowed with special abilities that echo their narrative strengths and vulnerabilities. New units also bolster the Shadow Armies, including dark chieftains, widening the tactical palette.

The rules introduce Area Majority/Influence and Area Movement mechanics, emphasizing the fight for strategic regions across Middle‑Earth. Campaign and battle cards drive the game flow, dictating events, missions and combat outcomes, while dice rolling and hand management add a dash of randomness and planning depth. Siege gameplay is expanded with new siege engines capable of turning the tide of fortified positions.

Designed for 2‑4 players, a typical session lasts around 150 minutes and retains a moderate complexity (weight 3.8/5). The expansion preserves the epic miniature‑wargame feel while layering richer narrative and strategic options that will satisfy Tolkien fans and tactical wargamers alike. If you love delving into the stories of Middle‑Earth's kings and crave deeper battles, Kings of Middle‑earth delivers with high‑quality components and rules that mesh seamlessly with the core War of the Ring system.
