In War of the Ring: Second Edition, players dive headfirst into Tolkien's epic saga, with one taking control of the Free Peoples and the other commanding the formidable Shadow Armies. Initially, the Free Peoples' nations are somewhat hesitant, reluctant to take up arms against Sauron. They must be provoked by attacks from the Dark Lord or persuaded by heroes like Gandalf and other members of the Fellowship of the Ring to fully commit to the war. A political track system shows each nation's engagement in the conflict. Military victory is an option for both sides: Sauron can win by conquering a certain number of Free Peoples' cities and strongholds, and vice versa. But the true hope of the Free Peoples rests on the secret mission of the Ring-bearer. While armies clash across Middle-earth, the Fellowship of the Ring attempts to secretly reach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring. Sauron, unaware of this intention, scours Middle-earth in search of the Ring, leading the Fellowship to face numerous dangers, represented by the rules of The Hunt for the Ring. The Free Peoples player must balance protecting the Ring-bearer with the need to mobilize defenses against the Shadow hordes, so that Middle-earth is not overrun before the Ring's mission is accomplished. Each turn is driven by an action die roll, where each die allows a specific action, such as moving armies or characters, recruiting troops, or advancing on the political track. These dice are also used to draw or play Event Cards, which represent crucial moments from the story (or events that could have happened), adding unexpected twists and altering the course of battles.
