About the game

What you do in a play session

The Breaking of the Fellowship offers an alternate scenario for the classic War of the Ring, playable with the second edition or, if you prefer, with the first edition expanded by Battles of the Third Age. The story picks up after the Fellowship has already traveled from Rivendell to Rauros, only to be scattered, sending its members across Middle‑Earth. Meanwhile, the Shadow armies are already on the move, ready to strike at the Free Peoples' strongholds. The game retains the epic feel of the series but focuses on a tense moment where cooperation among the heroes is crucial to prevent Sauron from overrunning the human, elven and dwarf fortresses.

Mechanics blend area majority/influence control with area movement, using detailed miniatures that bring the battlefield to life. Campaign and battle cards drive the flow, dictating events, reinforcements and combat outcomes, while dice rolling resolves the uncertainties of each clash. Hand management is key: choosing when to play a powerful card or hold resources for later can swing the war.

Supporting 2‑4 players, a game lasts between two and three hours, and despite the heavy theme, the complexity is moderate (weight 2/5), making it approachable for both War of the Ring veterans and newcomers to Tolkien’s world. If you enjoy strategy, miniatures and a strong narrative, this scenario delivers a tense, immersive experience where every decision can save or doom the Fellowship.
